The Screening Room at The Fish Hotel

private cinema to seat up to fourteen guests at a boutique hotel in the Cotswolds

We were approached by a local boutique hotel and asked to transform one of their under-used meeting rooms into a cinema room that could be used by the guests. At 8m x 7m the room was a reasonable size; however, they were working to a strict budget, which made specifying the system quite complex. We had to ensure the system we designed would be enough to fill the space, and we knew we could achieve the cinematic sound we were looking for, within the price range we were looking at, with Artcoustic speakers. Budget constraints allowed for a 7.1.4 configuration – ideally we would have included more for a room of this size - but we were confident that powered with the right amplification we could achieve the sound we were after. We used a Denon, which we chose because of its ability to drive the speaker system, combined with it being a lower cost option. We specified a JVC X7500 knowing it would deliver stunning visuals with the right level of brightness, and would work effectively with the long throw distance, whilst also keeping costs relatively low. To complete the system, we installed a Kaleidescape Strato to allow them to purchase movies online, often before they were released on BluRay, allowing them to run “premier screening” nights for non-residents. Sky was also installed, to permit the option of showing public events – the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Megan being a highlight of their calendar! In order to offer the biggest possible screen and keep within the budget, we built the screen ourselves, allowing for a 4m acoustically transparent Ultra HD screen to be included in the design, which simply wouldn’t have been possible had we had to purchase a mass-manufactured fixed screen. Initially the client intended to have the walls of the room covered with black curtains, which we felt would not only eat into their already limited budget, but would also make the room feel enclosed and oppressive, not to mention causing issues acoustically, and making speaker placement difficult, so we suggested fabric-walling the entire room. This solution was much more cost effective than having custom made curtains fitted, and solved acoustic issues, and allowed us to install the speakers out of sight behind the fabric. The result was simply stunning, and this room is truly outstanding – the level of performance it delivers in terms of the visuals and the sound quality is simply astonishing. The image is stunning, and despite the size, the room is filled with breath-taking sound. Through careful planning and sensible choices regarding each system component, we were able to take a limited amount of money and use it to create a room that not only looks magnificent, but also delivers the most amazing movie-watching experience! To further punctuate our success, this room went on to win the highly coveted Artcoustic installation of the month for July 2018! The system comprises: - Artcoustic 7.1.4 Speaker Package - Denon AVR X6400 Amplifier - JVC X7500 Projector - 4 Metre Cotswold Home Cinema Custom-Built Flush-Fit Ultra HD Projector Screen - Kaleidescape Strato Online Movie Server - Complete Fabric Wall System with hidden Acoustic Treatment for the room
